Happy National S'mores Day!
And welcome to this week's Brupdates 😁 With last week's launch and crazy rush to finish Japanese beginner and kanji, it was a slow writing week. That said, there's a bonus off-site post and you can expect next week's to be a bit fuller. Let's get into it.
This is a long post featuring the lessons learned and challenges overcome two months into the language challenge. If you're not too interested in keeping up with everything, this has a good summary section to get a quick catch up and "hmm, so that's what he's doing" vibe.
We have a fourth fun, off site post
Favorite Quote: "In other words — and this is the hard part — if you want to be productive, you need to spend time doing things that feel ridiculously unproductive."
My Last Day as a Surgeon (8 min)
I wanted to link to this excerpt I found from the book: When Breathe Becomes Air. A fantastic read by Paul Kalanithi, who pursued English to answer life's questions (so it's well written), only to then turn to neuroscience after being unsatisfied with his findings, and is shortly thereafter tasked with fighting his own cancer.
No favorite quotes here, otherwise it'd be the whole book (and a copyright infringement), but this is a good excerpt, so give it a shot! (The link is affiliate...I think I legally have to tell you? Idk, but it's another way of helping if you click it 😜)
The Myth of Quality Time (5 min)
I was put off at first thinking it was a tirade against quality time, but it turned into a piece dismantling the illusion of it. Rather good and quick read to help refresh our feelings towards the ones we love in these rough times.
Favorite Quote: "We delude ourselves when we say otherwise, when we invoke and venerate “quality time,” a shopworn phrase with a debatable promise: that we can plan instances of extraordinary candor, plot episodes of exquisite tenderness, engineer intimacy in an appointed hour."
When did Humans Invent Fire 🔥 (4 min)
Fun science post and dad joke of the week: "The answer is hotly debated"
Quote of The Week
“You don't have to have it all figured out to move forward.” -Roy T. Bennett
A beautiful reminder as we all struggle with getting things perfect and packaged before shipping it. Perhaps a second quote comes to mind: Just do it.
Thanks for reading! I hope you found something fun and that this week is a great one 😊 Till then, please share and let others know about the site or newsletter. It's always fun having more friends
PS: Did you like the time to read tid-bit? Let me know and I'll bring it back
